With the explosion of Home Theater products during the 90's, subwoofers became de rigeur, the "dot one" component of 5.1 and 7.1 surround systems, a way to bring home all those Hollywood-generated explosions. But the trend in home theater has been to shoehorn cubs into smaller and smaller cabinets, with manufacturers relying on heavy equalization and wishful thinking to achieve their performance claims. Not a great recipe for high-speed, low distortion, or, of course, accurate music reproduction.
